The Story of the Boa Bug by Bruce Robbins
"Did you ever find yourself in a moment of desperation due to limited time only to discover
a simple inspired solution that changed your life?
That's how the Boa Bug was born!
Boa Bugs started as a holiday gift for my ten nieces and nephews. (I have
eleven now!) I had been making puppets as gifts for them for about twelve
years.
One year I found myself with only three days to design and produce
my next gift.
I was at first a bit embarrassed that I would have to
resort to a simple finger puppet, a far cry from the more thought-out
gifts I had made in the past. In an attempt to give the little heads
some life, I reached for a feather boa and wrapped it around the head
to at least give it some hair.
Just as I was about to cut the feather
boa, I realized that my fingers peeking through the feathers looked
like little hands and feet. I then started playing with the newborn
creature, discovering different ways to manipulate it. It seemed to
take on a life of its own and I was suddenly having fun like a kid again.
My new gift was a hit with both the children and the adults in my large
family. My simple gift promoted imagination and self-expression with
its use and for this I felt that my gift was a success. The adults started
saying that the next toy just might be in the making.
A few days later, I gave a Boa Bug to a couple of my friends' children.
We then took a short train ride in to New York City to see a puppet
show. The two kids played with their Boa Bugs all day and had so much
fun that people in the street stopped us to ask where they might buy
this toy.
The next day I handed out Boa Bugs to adults and their kids at a New Year's
Eve party and told them of my plans to create a business around this
creature. As a puppeteer I said that I hoped to develop little skits
around Boa Bugs and asked them to help me brainstorm various names for
them using the words Boa or Bug.
The next three and half-hours were
spent in laughter as pages of Famous Boa Bug names, movies, TV shows,
musicals, operas, and various other Boa Bug stuff was recorded. I thought
that this could make for great fun."
